Need to raise my HDL --- HOW?

I have a huge family history of heart disease and I struggle with low HDL. my LDL is up slightly. How do I raise my HDL?

I have been taking Red Yeast Rise.

Cod Liver Oil-this taste awesome I swig it from the bottle.

Cholesterol is mostly related to genetics. Diet can make about a 10% difference, if not, try and get on medication(statins, fibrates, ect..)

I have had some personal sucess with the following:

Moderate dose fish oil (~10 caps QD)
Niacin (regular!! not flush free!!) 1000-2000 mgs QHS
CoQ10 100 mg QD

Also, soluble fiber really will make a noticable differance.
Try eating >2 cups oats daily

I have a family history of low HDL too, luckily I do not have a family history of heart disease though.

Along with what Massive G has said, which I take those as well here is what I have been taking for the last two years with much success:

1000mg no flush niacin
500mg Phsyillium husk tabs
1g Fish oil
1g Sesamin
No odor garlic
per what Dante recommended I replaced my baby aspirin with bromelain

At 12 weeks out from my show this year I my cholesterol was 173 total with 42 HDL...Two years ago it was half that ...

I am sure I am missing some things that I take but these are the staples

Fish Oil: 3grams

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: 2 Table Spoons

Niacin Flush Free: 3 Grams

i totally agree. niacin is very effective.

get a good cod liver oil supplement with naturally sourced vitamin a and d, fish oil has no vitamin a and d. always gte naturally sourced vitamins from real food. cod liver oil is one of the best for natural vitamin a and d . for natural vitamin e get cold pressed wheat germ oil

first cut out any margarine, and vegetable oils other than olive oil 100 percent right out. these are killers

Add a little Red Yeast Rice to your diet as well. This can help take care of your cholesterol.

9weeks post surgery on my rotator cuff and it is coming along. (slowly)
Suck as I have not trained for 3 months now!
My weight is hold well around 245 and I am holding my size well!

welcome to the board TJ it is great to have yet another top level amateur guy here.
 
Try almond oil.

Hasn't got a strong taste (unlike other nut oils) and goes well with lots of things. I spread it on granery bread toast and it is delicious.

Actually any alcohol will work. 1-2 serving of alcohol more than 3-4 times per week will significantly improve your cholesterol profile. Wine doesn't work any better than any other form of alcohol it does have anti oxidant but so do dark and unfiltered beers.
